Dr. Anita Roberts Memorial Garden at NIH
View Other News Headlines

Patton Harris Rust & Associates, Inc. (PHR+A) is completing plans for a Memorial Garden at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) campus in Bethesda, Maryland. The garden will be a memorial for Dr. Anita Roberts, who was a highly-regarded cancer researcher and the chief of the Laboratory of Cell Regulation and Carcinogenesis at the National Cancer Institute. The memorial garden design is based on Concept Plans developed by Landscape Architect Elin Haaga. The design features curvilinear stone retaining seat walls, ribbons of granite sett paving, and curving concrete walkways that form the shape of the Transforming Growth Factor (TGF Beta) protein. Dr. Roberts had conducted important research into the effect that TGF Beta has on inhibiting and stimulating growth in different types of cancer. A palette of native and ornamental trees, shrubs, and perennials creates a naturalistic setting with seasonal interest. A bronze frog sculpture will be seated on one of the curving stone seat walls, adding a special focal point to the garden. PHR+A landscape architects and engineers are preparing the Design Development and Site Plans for the NIH design-build firm Phelps & Phelps Consulting, Rockville, Maryland. PHR+A also provided surveying and geotechnical services, and structural engineering for the stone retaining and seating wall design.
